The sun is shining as the adventurers make their way through the village, perhaps heading for the tavern. Along the way, a smiling elf comes their way and points in the direction of a small hut. The adventurers look questioningly at one another, and then turn towards the hut. It looks like the home of a seer or a witch, with eerie smoke coming from the chimney. If they approach the door, it will open of its own accord and if they peer inside, they will see a man sitting in a large elaborately-carved wooden chair.
The man rises from his seat and beckons them inside. He is a young sorcerer, with only a few silvery strands in his short hair. He has a smooth face with piercing golden eyes. As he lifts his hands to begin his story, he reveals hands with short, but clawlike fingers.
“Good day to you all,” he begins, his voice deep and throaty. “Welcome to my village. It is certain that you will be approached by many to venture into the dungeons for one reason or another, and I intend to be the first to present you with a quest. I am a sorcerer with far more power than any others of my age and there is just one more thing I must accomplish. I need a dragon, a small, live dragon for the most important spell I will ever cast. I would like you to go into the caves for me, where there is rumored to be one last ancient dragon, with several young. Please bring me one of these young dragons, and I will pay you three times’ what any others may offer you here in this village.”
[/i]This young sorcerer has heard of, and met with, many other sorcerers who claim to have the blood of dragons flowing through their veins. He is filled with a jealous rage, because, despite his power and promising future, his blood is not pure. His mother was a dwarf, and he can lay no claim to having dragons’ blood in him. He is certain that with his unusual power, he can cast a spell using a young dragon, and put the dragon’s blood into his own blood, therefore making him the most powerful Sorcerer the world has ever seen. As he waits for the adventurers to accept his quest, his golden yellow eyes glitter evilly with the promise of the infinite power he so craves…

Their journey has been long. The adventurers must be bone-weary. Just ahead is a rough log cabin where they may find a morsel of food for their empty stomachs, and perhaps a place to lay their heads for a few hours of merciful sleep.
A bent figure emerges from the doorway, wearing a long, brown robe that covers most of it’s body. A few gray hairs peek out from the edges of the hood. Hands appear from the voluminous sleeves to push back the hood. It is a woman; a woman who’s skin is so wrinkled and weathered, it would be impossible to guess her age. She speaks, and her voice is like nothing any of the adventurers would have imagined. It sounds like the tinkling of crystal, and the sound of tiny bells. Her voice is clear and strong, and she commands attention when she speaks.
“Welcome, Strangers. By the look of your clothing, you have come a long way. And your way is to be longer still. I have need of someone to find an object of great value that was taken from me a fortnight ago. It is a blade, an ancient blade that has been in my family for many generations. It is a short dagger with the head of a dragon on the hilt, and the dragon’s eyes are two of the rarest rubies found in a mountain cave over a century ago. It is worth more than a common man could make in his whole lifetime. Two thieves came into my home unawares and took it from my chest of heirloom possessions. A near neighbor saw one of the thieves, and swears it was a half-orc. The other was significantly smaller, so may be a dwarf. They fled north into the dungeons, and my men have been unable, as yet, to find any trace of them. I have need of fearless adventurers to brave the unknown dangers of these dungeons to bring back this priceless treasure. If you accept this quest, I will give you provisions for your journey, and you will be given 2 full days’ rest before you embark.”

The sun is setting as the old man walks off of the dusty street into the tavern. His eyes are red rimmed and dry and he rubs them with one hand before scanning the room, looking for adventurers. He spots a small group in one corner that look like they’ve just settled in for a night of drinking. He makes his way over to their table and greets them in a voice that he hopes does not sound too desperate. Desperate is what he really is. In fact, he is beyond desperate. His son and a group of his son’s friends have gone missing more than two weeks ago, and nobody has been able to find them. A slightly disreputable individual from the village claims to have seen them being grabbed by some large, unidentified creatures and being dragged in the direction of the dungeons, but whether it was from fear or disbelief in the witness, nobody has dared venture into the dungeons to rescue them. So, as a last resort, he is seeking out adventurers to go after the young men and bring them home.

The old well in the village is deep, but there is very little water on the bottom. Strange sounds have been heard coming up from the opening late at night when the village is sleeping. The silence of the night has made it possible to hear the noises. A few men have climbed part way down the well to investigate, but most have turned back in fear. Most. All but one. One young man disappeared altogether. The man who was with him claimed to have seen the other man's light below him, and then the light seemed to lurch to one side and then, with a guttural cry, the man and his light vanished "into the wall." He was pulled by someone, or something, into the very wall of the well. People speculated that since the well had so much less water now, that a previously unknown passage was now revealed in the wall of the well; another way into the dungeons perhaps. Nobody else dared venture down the well to explore it. Nobody, save a small party of adventurers, who were setting out at dawn on this cool, foggy day...
